Alistair Johnston, born on the 8th of October 1998 in Canada, has worked his way up the ranks to become a formidable defender for Celtic, primarily fulfilling the role of right back. Standing at 5 foot 10 inches (1.8 metres) and weighing in at a solid 12 stone 1 pound (77kg), Johnston wears number 2 on his jersey whilst brightly representing this legendary club on the pitch.
Furthermore, the defender's skills are not only restricted to club football; Johnston has been a commendable representative of his home country, earning caps playing for Canada's national team. His talent doesn't go unnoticed in monetary terms either, as his market value currently stands around £7.6m (according to Transfermarkt).
Johnston's career kick-started in February 2020 when he joined Nashville in the USA's MLS through the draft series. Throughout his debut season in Nashville, he managed to make 18 appearances in league matches, and further improved his record the following season with 26 appearances and a single goal. December 2021 saw Johnston's departure from Nashville as he transferred to CF Montreal, still in MLS, where the 2022 season saw him notch up 33 appearances and four goals.
Having proven his abilities on the other side of the Atlantic, in January 2023, Johnston was transferred to Celtic for a fee in the ballpark of £3m. His first season at the iconic Glasgow club, the 2022-2023 season, saw him make 14 appearances and score a single goal. However, his prominence increased drastically as warmer relations with the Hoops resulted in 32 appearances both in the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 seasons, with a netted goal in the former and four in the latter. His streak continues in the current 2025-2026 season with two appearances to date.
Johnston’s performance in various prestigious football tournaments has been impressive. This includes the Champions League 2023-2024 and Europa League 2025-2026 for Celtic, scoring one goal in the League Cup 2025-2026, and making four starts in the Scottish Cup 2024-2025. On the international stage, Johnston had two starts and one substitute appearance in the Gold Cup 2025, and six starts in the Copa America 2024 for Canada.
Johnston's dedication and consistent performance have made him an integral player for Celtic and a preferred choice for various international tournaments. Celtic fans look forward to seeing him contributing more to the glory of the club in the future.
