Arne Engels, born on the 8th of September in 2003, hails from Belgium, a nation well known for its array of football talent. At the age of 22, Engels predominantly operates in the heart of the midfield for his current side, Celtic. Engels stands out, not just for his formidable skills on the pitch, but also for his towering frame, which measures at exactly 6ft (1.84m). Alongside this, he weighs in at a robust 11st 2lb (71kg), solidifying his presence within the game.
Bearing the number 27 jersey, Engels has also had the honour of representing the Belgium U21 national team, further showcasing both his ability and potential. According to Transfermarkt, his current market value is estimated to be around the £8.5m mark.
Engels had his first taste of playing professional football when he joined Club NXT in the Challenger Pro League in Belgium as a trainee back in July 2015. After honing his skills, he made his move to Augsburg in the Bundesliga in Germany in January 2023 for a transfer fee approximating to £100k. His initial season at Augsburg saw him appear 18 times in league matches. By his second season, he had become a key player for Augsburg, making 32 appearances and managing to score three goals in league matches. Unfortunately, his third season was less fruitful, with Engels making just one appearance in the league.
His lack of game time led to a move to Celtic in the Premiership in Scotland in August 2024, for which he commanded a transfer fee of a staggering £11m. Since then, Celtic fans have been thrilled to see Engels at the heart of their team's midfield, as he made 34 appearances and scored nine goals in league matches during his first season. Engels is proving to continue his prominent involvement this current season, with 23 first team appearances and four goals already under his belt.
Beyond his success in the league, Engels has represented Celtic in the League Cup, Champions League Qualifiers, and Europa League for the season 2025 - 2026. In the League cup, he started three times and was substituted in once; in the Champions League Qualifiers, he made two appearances as a substitute; and in the Europa League, he managed to score a goal in his six starts and two appearances as a substitute. This clearly highlights Engels' potent influence and the pivotal role he has played in Celtic's campaigns across multiple competitions.
