Callum McGregor, born in Glasgow on 14 June 1993 (age 32), is as closely tied to modern Celtic as any player of his generation. A Scotland international and Celtic’s current captain, he wears the number 42 and has built a career that is overwhelmingly shaped by one club.
His senior education was helped by a loan spell at Notts County, where he scored on debut and then produced 12 goals in 37 league appearances in 2013-14. That was enough to suggest he was not just another tidy midfielder waiting his turn. He returned to Celtic in July 2014 and scored on his first-team debut, with European qualifying ties part of that early breakthrough period. A long-term contract followed soon after.
Since then, McGregor has become a central figure rather than merely a long-serving one. Across 12 seasons he has made 384 league appearances for Celtic and scored 52 league goals, an unusually strong return for a player so often trusted in the deeper areas of midfield. He has also collected 11 Premiership titles, seven League Cups and five Scottish Cups, which is a fair indication of the standards he has lived inside rather than a decorative line on a CV.
In 2025-26, he remains firmly part of the side. He has made 55 appearances in all competitions for Celtic, scoring three goals, including 36 league appearances and two league goals. His form has been strong and consistent, which is generally what Celtic have come to expect from him rather than something needing dressed up as a surprise.
His current market value is around £2.5m, according to Transfermarkt. More importantly, McGregor’s career is one of local connection, development, captaincy and sustained usefulness at Celtic. Few modern players have carried so much of the club’s recent domestic success from the middle of the pitch.
