Well, well, another bright spark on Scotland's football scene; lend your ear to this fair football tale. It's veering towards the blue side of the spectrum, but bear with me; we were all young pups like Djeidi Gassama once. Our hero, born in the exotic climes of Mauritania on September 10, 2003, chips into the Rangers' forward line, plying his trade as the left winger. At 5ft 9in (1.77m for our European counterparts), and a sprightly 11 stone (70 kilos), the lad cuts a fine figure on the field, pulling on the number 23 jersey.
Ah, the musty voyeuristic fancies of modern football – his market value, you ask? Already valued at around £2.6m, if the statistics wizards over at Transfermarkt are to be believed.
Not plucked from the obscurity like a kilted Highlander, our boy Gassama spun his skills initially in the glittering City of Light. Joining the ranks of Paris St. Germain as a raw trainee in July 2019, where anonymity became his confidante.
A short jaunt to Belgium followed in September 2022. Here, Gassama fashioned himself a promising future with Eupen in their Challenger Pro League, scoring a couple of goals that probably pleased his Mum immensely.
Then, an odd choice, I agree, to the lowly realms of Sheffield Wednesday in the English Championship. An undisclosed fee bundled him off, where his knack for goal amplified over two seasons with a grand total of ten eggs in his basket.
Then the plot twists. Swapping the raw exuberance of an English terrace for the ever-so-subtle subtleties of the Scottish Premiership, Gassama made his way north in July 2025 for a modest sum of around £2.2m. Here we find him, ten first-team appearances down the road, and the loyal Rangers supporters nearing the climax of their own fair football tale.
His recent exploits? Well, they've thrown the lad into the mix in the League Cup, and off to the Champions League qualifiers, where he scored a notable four goals in six appearances. The Europa League also got a whiff of his prowess, getting the gift of his boot for one goal.
There you have it, one for the blue corner of our Scottish footballing menagerie. Is Gassama going to be the next footballing sensation, or will he forever be a big fish in our small pond? Only time will tell, but isn’t that the beauty of football?
