Gregor Kobel, born on 6 December 1997 (age 28), is a Switzerland international goalkeeper and Borussia Dortmund’s number 1. At 6ft 4in (1.93m), he is an imposing presence, though his game has long been about more than simply filling the goal.
His early senior career was shaped away from the centre of attention. After coming through at Hoffenheim, he had limited first-team exposure there, with one league appearance in 2018-2019, before loan spells gave him the regular football a young goalkeeper needs. Those years mattered: less glamorous, perhaps, but useful in the way goalkeeping development usually is.
Dortmund is where his career has properly settled. Across six seasons he has made 149 league appearances for the club, and the scale of that spell has made him far more than a passing custodian. He remains central to their side in 2025-2026, with 34 Bundesliga appearances and 10 in the Champions League, bringing him to 44 appearances in all competitions for Dortmund this season.
He has also stayed relevant with Switzerland, featuring in World Cup and European World Cup qualifying action, while Dortmund have used him at the Club World Cup as well. His current market value is around £34m, according to Transfermarkt.
Kobel’s career has moved from developmental loans and limited early minutes to a sustained spell as Dortmund’s first-choice goalkeeper. He is still a regular first-team presence, and his career is now firmly tied to the club where he has done most of his serious work.
