In the astonishing world of football, mediocrity often tends to disguise itself behind a deluge of statistics. Take Jason Holt for example. Born on 19 February 1993, this native of Scotland fancies himself a central midfielder for St Johnstone. With a height of a mere 5ft 4in (1.64m) and tipping the scales at 11st (70kg), Holt certainly doesn't tow the line of the stereotypical 'big man in the middle'.
For those of you curious to gauge his worth in the ruthless market of football, Holt's current market value is roughly estimated at £214k by Transfermarkt. Oh, and if you're one for splitting hairs over contractual issues, his deal with St Johnstone has another meandering year and 2 months to go, expiring on the 31 May 2026.
Now for the juicy part of his career story - the transfers and the statistics that invariably seem to follow suit. Holt entered into our consciousness at Hearts in the Premiership in Scotland back in July 2010. Over the following 4 seasons, he made a total of 62 appearances and managed to put the ball at the back of the net on 7 occasions, proving he's got some nerve, eh?
In November 2011, there was a brief interruption. Holt made a demure move to Raith Rovers, netting once in five appearances. But like a prodigal son, he found himself back home at Hearts in January 2012, only to continue his string of sporadic appearances and occasional goals.
January 2015 saw Holt crossing borders to Sheffield United. A more clinical Holt surfaced that season, scoring five goals in 16 appearances. However, it wasn't to last and by July that year, our nomadic midfielder was back in the familiar territory of the Scottish Premiership, this time donning the jersey of Rangers for an esteemed sum of £65k. Over the next 3 seasons, Holt made a total of 89 appearances and netted 12 goals.
Some more hemming and hawing saw Holt go on loan to Fleetwood Town and later to St Johnstone. But no worries, he didn't go goalless. Finally, in 2020, Livingston decided to give the well-travelled man a rest and bought him from Rangers. Four seasons and barely two goals later, Holt found his way back to St Johnstone in 2024.
Fast forward to today and he's already made 24 appearances this season. Did I mention he also had two starts in the Scottish Cup 2024-2025? So, there's that.
