João Palhinha, born in Lisbon on 9 July 1995 (age 30), is a Portugal international defensive midfielder with Bayern Munich. A commanding 6ft 3in (1.90m) presence, he has made a career from ball-winning, positioning and the less glamorous business of keeping a midfield intact.
He came through Sporting CP, but his development was shaped by time away from the club. Early loans to Moreirense and Belenenses gave him senior football before a more substantial spell at Braga, where he began to look like a midfielder ready for proper responsibility rather than one simply collecting minutes.
Palhinha returned to Sporting and established himself before moving to Fulham in 2022. His Premier League spell made clear what he was: a disciplined, physical holding midfielder whose value was often in stopping trouble before it became visible. Bayern Munich followed in 2024, taking him into a deeper and more demanding squad.
His most productive league season came at Tottenham Hotspur in 2025-26, with five goals in 33 appearances. At Bayern this season, he has not made a league appearance, though he has played eight times in the Champions League and scored once. He is valued at around £34m by Transfermarkt.
From Sporting’s loan pathway to England and Bayern, Palhinha’s career has been a steady climb for a specialist defensive midfielder. He remains an established Portugal international with experience across several demanding leagues.
