Joe Newell, born on 15 March 1993 (age 33), is an English central midfielder best known in Scotland for his spell with Hibernian. A left-sided midfielder earlier in his career, he has been used primarily through the middle at Easter Road, where he has worn the number 11 shirt.
His most productive league season came at Rotherham United in 2015–16, when he scored five goals in 35 appearances. That remains the clearest attacking return in a career more often built around midfield work than headline numbers.
At Hibernian, Newell became an important first-team player rather than a passing squad name. In 2026–27, he has made four league appearances, along with three in the League Cup, one in the Scottish Cup and three in Conference League qualifying, taking him to 11 appearances across all competitions for the season.
Newell’s career has been a steady one: established in England, then settled in Scotland with Hibs, where he has been a regular presence in central midfield.
