John Souttar, born 25 September 1996 (age 29), is a Scotland centre-half and a regular part of the Rangers first team. He wears squad number 5 and remains a continuing presence in their side in 2025–26, rather than a fringe name kept around for emergencies.
His most productive league season came at Hearts in 2021–22, when he scored four goals in 27 appearances. For a central defender, that was a decent return, though his main value has generally been in the more ordinary work of defending. Before his Rangers spell, he also picked up a League Cup winners’ medal.
At Rangers in 2025–26, Souttar has made 24 league appearances, along with one in the Scottish Cup and five in the Europa League, for 30 appearances in all competitions without a goal. He has also remained involved with Scotland, making five appearances in European World Cup qualifying this season.
Souttar’s career has taken him from Hearts to a regular role at Rangers, with Scotland caps alongside it. He is an established centre-half in the current side, with his relevance based on steady selection rather than noise around him.
