John Souttar, born on 25 September 1996 (age 29), is a Scotland centre-half and Rangers’ number 5. His career was well established before his move to Ibrox, with his most productive league season coming at Hearts in 2021–22, when he scored four goals in 27 appearances.
At Rangers, Souttar has remained a regular first-team presence rather than a fringe name. In 2025–26 he has made 37 appearances across all competitions, including 23 in the league, six in Champions League qualifying and five in the Europa League, without scoring. His season has been solid enough, though he has been out of the matchday squad in recent weeks after last featuring in the 4–2 win over Dundee United on 4 April 2026.
He has also stayed involved with Scotland, making five appearances in European World Cup qualifying this season. That international relevance matters: Souttar is not just filling a shirt domestically, even if his recent absence from the Rangers squad slightly checks the tone.
Souttar’s career has taken him from a productive spell at Hearts to an important defensive role at Rangers, with Scotland caps and a League Cup winners’ medal elsewhere along the way. He remains an established centre-half in the Scottish game.
