The Celtic centre-back Liam Scales, born on 8 August 1998 in the Republic of Ireland, stands at 6ft 2in (1.88m) in height and weighs 13st 5lb (85kg). He has represented his native country on the national team.
In January 2017, having started his professional career at UCD in the First Division in his home country, Scales put in an impressive debut season in 2019, playing in 30 league matches and finding the back of the net once. A little under three years later, in January 2020, he transferred to Shamrock Rovers in the Premier Division in Ireland. Over the course of two seasons, he made 39 appearances and scored twice in league matches.
In August 2021, his promising performances attracted the attention of Celtic, leading to a transfer to the Scottish Premiership. While his first season (2021 -2022) consisted of just five first team appearances and a single goal, the subsequent years have shown a definite upward trajectory. Between the 2023-2024 and the ongoing 2025-2026 seasons, Scales made a total of 60 first-team appearances in league matches, scoring three times.
His time at Celtic saw a brief interruption in July 2022 with a loan transfer to fellow Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen, where he proved his worth by making 31 first team appearances and scoring a goal.
On his return to Celtic from Aberdeen in June 2023, he continued his solid performances, bringing his total number of appearances with Celtic to 88 league matches, a testament to his importance to the squad.
Besides his league contributions, Scales' other notable performances include his efforts in the League Cup and the Scottish Cup, along with his starts in the World Cup Qualifiers for Republic of Ireland and in the Champions League Qualifiers for Celtic, scoring a goal in each of the last two competitions. His current market value, according to Transfermarkt, is approximately £4.3m. If anything, time has done nothing but burnish his reputation as a reliable defender.
