Marcel Sabitzer, born on 17 March 1994 (age 32), is an Austrian central midfielder with Borussia Dortmund, where he wears number 20. His current market value is around £17m, according to Transfermarkt.
He came through in Austria with Admira Wacker and Rapid Wien before RB Leipzig took him into the Red Bull system. The important early turn was his loan to Red Bull Salzburg in 2014-15, when he scored 19 league goals in 33 appearances. For a midfielder, even one with licence to break forward, that was serious output rather than a statistical quirk.
Sabitzer then became a regular part of RB Leipzig’s rise, offering the sort of midfield running, shooting and set-piece threat that tends to travel well across systems. Moves to Bayern Munich and a loan spell at Manchester United followed, before he joined Borussia Dortmund, where he has remained a first-team option rather than a fading name on the squad list.
In 2025-26, he has made 26 Bundesliga appearances and scored one league goal, with six Champions League appearances taking him to 32 matches in all competitions for Dortmund. The goal return is well down on his most productive years, but he is still involved often enough to matter. He has also remained active with Austria, including eight European World Cup qualifying appearances this season, scoring three times.
Sabitzer’s career has moved from Austrian development and a productive Salzburg loan into sustained work at major German clubs, with a brief Premier League detour. His best seasons showed unusual scoring from midfield; his current role at Dortmund is steadier, but still relevant.
