Mario Hermoso, born 18 June 1995 (age 31), is a Spanish central defender with Roma. His current market value is around £6m, according to Transfermarkt.
Hermoso came through the Real Madrid system, but the more useful early education came away from the comfort of the academy route. A loan spell at Real Valladolid gave him senior football and a harder edge, the sort of grounding young centre-halves tend to need before anyone is fully convinced by them.
His move to Espanyol gave his career proper momentum. The 2018-19 season was his most productive in the league, with three goals in 32 appearances, and it helped establish him as more than a tidy defender with a good upbringing. He looked ready for a bigger platform without looking like a project.
That next step came with Atlético Madrid, where he spent several seasons in a more demanding defensive environment. Hermoso was never short of technical assurance, but his game there also had to stand up to the less glamorous work expected of centre-backs at that level.
He is now at Roma, and in 2026-27 he has made five Serie A appearances and scored once. His career has moved through major Spanish clubs and on to Italy, shaped by early senior minutes, a strong Espanyol spell, and a long enough run at the top end to mark him out as an established defender rather than a passing name.
