Mike van der Hoorn, born on 15 October 1992 (age 33), is a Dutch central defender currently with AEK Larnaca. At an imposing 6ft 3in (1.90m), he has the obvious frame for the position, which is always useful before anyone starts pretending defending is only about angles and distribution.
His early senior progress came at FC Utrecht, where his best attacking return arrived in the 2012-2013 league season: four goals in 31 appearances. For a centre-half, that is a decent contribution rather than a gimmick, and it pointed to a player capable of carrying a threat at set pieces as well as doing the basic work at the back.
Van der Hoorn’s career has since taken him on to AEK Larnaca, where he remains listed as a first-team central defender. His current market value is around £680,000, according to Transfermarkt.
His career is that of an established Dutch defender who came through at Utrecht, built a senior record from there, and is now playing in Cyprus with AEK Larnaca.
