Paulo Bernardo was born in Almada, Portugal, on 24 January 2002 (age 24), and came through at Benfica before Celtic brought him to Glasgow in September 2023. A central midfielder rather than a headline act on arrival, he was given time to find his place in a side where patience is not always the easiest commodity to locate.
That first Celtic spell quickly became more than a holding pattern. In 2023-2024 he made 22 league appearances and scored three times, still his most productive league season at the club. It was a useful year for him: not flawless, but constructive, and it helped turn him from a Benfica prospect into a player with a clearer senior identity.
Celtic has since become the main club of his career. Wearing squad number 28, Bernardo has made 58 league appearances for the club, scoring five league goals, and has been part of a side that won two Premiership titles, the League Cup and a Scottish Cup. He has also been on the losing side in a Scottish Cup final, which is less often framed for the brochure.
In 2025-2026, Bernardo remained a regular first-team presence, with 22 appearances and one goal across all competitions, including seven in the Europa League. His league return was quieter, with eight appearances and no goals, but he continued to be used as part of Celtic’s midfield options rather than drifting to the margins.
His current market value is around £3m, according to Transfermarkt. Bernardo’s career is still developing, but its shape is already clear enough: Benfica gave him his start, while Celtic has given him the platform and the bulk of his senior football.
