Muirhead launched his professional career with Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership in July 2012. His maiden 2012 - 2013 season consisted of a solitary first-team appearance in a league match. However, he saw a noticeable increase in game time in the next two seasons, making 21 and 20 appearances respectively, with a couple of goals to his name each season.
In February 2015, Muirhead moved to Dundee United, also in the Scottish Premiership, in a deal worth roughly £131k. His stint at Dundee United was mixed, including a loan period at Partick Thistle in the Championship, where he made eight appearances and netted two goals.
July 2016 saw Muirhead make another transfer, this time to Hearts in the Premiership, where he made 18 first-team appearances and scored twice. A year later, in January 2017, Robbie made his venture into English football by joining MK Dons in League Two for an undisclosed transfer fee. Over his tenure at MK Dons, he made a total of 32 first-team appearances and scored twice.
Muirhead returned to Scottish soil in August 2018, signing for Dunfermline Athletic in the Championship. A year later, he made the move to Greenock Morton in the same league. His performance significantly improved during this stint; he netted 10 and 12 goals respectively in his two seasons at the club, whilst also making over 30 appearances each season.
In July 2024, Muirhead made the step up to the Premiership again, signing for Livingston. Since then, he has made 33 appearances and scored 13 goals in his debut 2024 - 2025 season, while in the ongoing 2025 - 2026 season, he has made 13 appearances and scored once.
It's worth mentioning his contributions to Livingston's cup campaigns, with three goals scored in five starts in the League Cup 2025 - 2026, and a goal scored during the Premiership Play-offs in 2024 - 2025.
