Scott Arfield, born on All Saints' Day of all days in 1988, is yet another midfielder. They seem to grow them like potatoes up here. He plays mainly as a central midfielder for Falkirk, because someone has to. And despite what some folks might say about folk from Scotland, he can stand erect at an average 5ft 10in (1.78m) and weighs in at a sensible 11st (70kg). He's got the number 37 emblazoned on his jersey, which is one way of ensuring you're not easily forgotten.
The financial wizards at Transfermarkt reckon he's worth around €50k, which equates to a smidgen under £42.5k. Well, I suppose we've all had days like that.
Arfield started his journey in football in July 2006 at Falkirk, a club with such low expectations that they were the happiest bunch of fellows when their trainee made more than 30 first team appearances and scored a handful of goals in the Premiership each season from 2007 to 2010. The story repeated itself rather unremarkably during his return to the club in 2024 and the ongoing 2025-26 season.
A brief and uneventful stint at Huddersfield Town from 2010 to 2013 where he made sporadic appearances and scored a trickle of goals was followed by his move to Burnley. Ah, Burnley, the Riviera of the north, where he had a roller coaster ride, appearing and scoring seemingly when he fancied from 2013 to 2018.
Then he decided that Scotland was a nice place after all and returned to sign for another Premiership club whose name must be redacted from this narrative from 2018 to 2023. During this time, he made a reasonable number of appearances and scored a modest number of goals each season.
Then, in an attempt to give his career a Hollywood ending, Arfield jetted off to Charlotte FC in the MLS in July 2023. But sadly it seemed there were more extras in a blockbuster movie than his appearances and goals during his tenure there from 2023 to 2024.
And finally, a brief interval at Bolton Wanderers, probably for a cup of tea and a scone, in July 2024 brought him full circle back to Falkirk in February 2025. He repeated the same goal-scoring and appearance-making exploits from his earlier spell at the club.
The only bright spot worth mentioning is his three goals in three starts and two Substitute appearances in the League Cup 2025 - 2026 for Falkirk. Because even in the bleakest of stories, you've got to end it with a wee bit of sparkle.
