Born on 19 January 2000, Stephen Welsh is a determined Scottish defender, currently flexing his muscles for Motherwell. Standing at 6ft 3in (1.91m) and weighing 12st 3lb (78kg), he's a formidable presence on the pitch, brandishing the number 57 jersey. Besides the domestic scene, the player has also displayed his talent on the international stage, duly representing the Scotland U21 national squad.
As per the Transfermarkt, Welsh currently carries a market value in the region of £1.5m. The player started his footballing journey with Celtic, as a trainee in July 2017, marking the beginning of an eight-season-long tenure.
During his initial season (2019 - 2020) with Celtic, Welsh maintained a modest presence on the field, making only one appearance. However, his prominence gradually increased in the subsequent 2020 - 2021 season, gaining 16 appearances and securing his first goal. Over the course of the next five seasons, his involvement varied considerably, with his final two seasons contributing to a mere two games.
Despite the fluctuating involvement, Welsh briefly enjoyed stints away from Celtic. In August 2019, Welsh moved to Greenock Morton on loan, eventually returning to Celtic in January 2020. His time away didn't quell his passion, as his return to Celtic saw him making a substantial number of appearances. Furthermore, Welsh experienced overseas action when he transferred to Mechelen in the Belgian Pro League on loan in January 2025, where he played seven league matches.
Following his return to Celtic in June 2025, Welsh jumped ships to Motherwell in September the same year. Upon completion of his loan period and a brief return to Celtic, he once again found himself at Motherwell in February 2026. The current season witnessed his growing involvement, with Welsh making 21 first team appearances and scoring one goal. His contribution extended to the League Cup 2025 - 2026 for Motherwell, with one start and one appearance as a substitute, thus showcasing his invaluable presence both domestically and on an international level.
