Stephen Welsh, born in Coatbridge on 19 January 2000 (age 26), is a Scottish central defender with a long Celtic thread running through his senior career. He joined Celtic from Greenock Morton in January 2020 and, at 6ft 3in (1.91m), has always had the frame for the position, even if opportunities at Parkhead have had to be earned in short bursts rather than handed out in neat runs.
His busiest league season for Celtic came in 2020–21, when he made 16 appearances and scored once. He has since remained around the first-team picture, wearing squad number 57, and has been part of Celtic squads that won two Premiership titles, two League Cups and a Scottish Cup. That is a solid haul for a player whose role has often been as cover, competition and occasional starter rather than a fixed name on the team sheet.
Welsh moved on loan to Motherwell in January 2025, a sensible step for regular football. In 2025–26 he made one league appearance for Celtic and 26 league appearances on loan at Motherwell, scoring once. His current market value is around £1.5m, according to Transfermarkt.
His career remains tied to Celtic, but the Motherwell loan has given him the steady senior minutes that can be hard to find in Glasgow. For now, Welsh is an established professional still connected to Celtic’s first-team squad, with his next step depending on whether those minutes can become more than occasional at his parent club.
